This book deals with the philosophical framework of Shaykh Muhammad 'Abduh's educational thought, which is reflection of concrete situations of 19th century Egypt. the author focuses on three fundamental elements that constitute education, i.e., the educational terms, the concept of man, and the curriculum, in order to study the formulation of a system of education and its implementation. The study does not only aim at understanding and analyzing 'Abduh's thought, or demonstrating the limitations of his arguments, but also at providing an overview of the early phase of the Muslim Modernist movement, its success or failure in confronting the intellectual and cultural challenges from the modern West.
